As summer temperatures continue to rise, with heatwaves becoming more frequent each year, choosing the right route can make all the difference. Starting early in the morning certainly helps, but selecting roads that stay naturally cooler is just as important.

This 73 km loop has been designed to favour the coolest areas around Annecy, following north- and east-facing climbs, forest roads and naturally shaded valleys. Much of the route is protected by trees or surrounding mountains, creating noticeably cooler riding conditions than the more exposed roads around the lake.

It may not be the most famous ride in the Annecy area, but whenever the temperature climbs above 30°C, this is the route I choose.

The Route

1. Annecy – Faverges – Col du Marais via Les Essérieux

The ride begins along the western shore of Lake Annecy, following quiet, tree-lined roads to Faverges. From there, the route climbs gently through the peaceful Essérieux Valley to reach the Col du Marais.

2. Col du Marais – Les Clefs – Thônes

A long, gentle descent sheltered by the impressive Tournette massif leads through Les Clefs before reaching the lively mountain town of Thônes.

3. Thônes – Fier Valley – Alex

Leaving Thônes, the route follows the shaded Fier Valley along a long, gentle downhill false flat. Protected by the Dent du Cruet, this section remains pleasantly cool even on hot summer days. The road then reaches the village of Alex, nestled beneath the Dents de Lanfon on the mountain's northern side.

4. Alex – Col de Bluffy

A short but enjoyable climb leads to the Col de Bluffy, offering beautiful views before the next descent.

5. Barbanchon Road – Northern Side of Mont Veyrier – Pont de Dingy

The route follows the quiet Barbanchon Road along the northern slopes of Mont Veyrier before descending to the Fier River and the Pont de Dingy.

6. Pont de Dingy – Nâves (Ancient Roman Road)

After crossing the river, the route joins the ancient Roman road. The climb begins with a steep section before easing into a more regular gradient all the way to the village of Nâves.

7. Nâves – Pont de Nâves

Leaving the village, the road descends back to the Fier before crossing the Pont de Nâves.

8. Sur-les-Bois – Return to Annecy

A final shaded climb leads to Sur-les-Bois, overlooking Annecy-le-Vieux. From there, a pleasant descent brings you back to the shores of Lake Annecy, completing the loop.
